Step into a unique Transition Year experience in the heart of Gaeltacht na nDéise, where the Irish language is not just taught — it’s lived. At Coláiste na Rinne, students combine academic growth with cultural immersion, personal development, and unforgettable experiences, all within a vibrant, supportive residential community.
This is a 5 day boarding programme, Monday to Friday. The programme is delivered on a collaborative basis between Coláiste na Rinne and Meánscoil San Nioclás, the local secondary school in the Waterford Gaeltacht.
Boarding students will be registered as students of Meánscoil San Nioclás and will attend the transition year programme there in the company of local students. Students participating in the transition year programme will be required to use Irish at all times including: at school, at leisure and during off-campus excursions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the accommodation like for students?
Students stay in dormitory-style accommodation, with two students sharing each room.
Boys and girls live on separate floors, ensuring privacy and safety. The accommodation is basic but clean, and each child has their own locker and wardrobe for personal belongings.
Bathroom and shower facilities are shared and regularly supervised to maintain cleanliness and comfort. Our focus is on providing a safe, supportive, and homely environment for all boarders.
Must children speak Irish immediately?
Irish is the language of the course and is expected from the very first day in the classroom.
Students are encouraged to use Irish throughout all areas of the Coláiste, helping them grow in confidence and fluency in a natural, everyday way. Staff encourage and support the students at all times, creating a positive and immersive Irish-language environment.
What is the food like?
Our food is varied, nutritious, and mostly made from fresh, home-produced ingredients. Students enjoy a healthy, balanced diet with a choice of meals at most main mealtimes.
We are very mindful of individual needs and cater for all dietary requirements, ensuring every student is well looked after and well nourished.
What is the weekly programme?
Students will follow the standard TY programme with numerous extra-curricular activities.
Students will be required to be on campus by 6pm on Sunday of each week and to be off-campus by 4pm on Friday.
Academic Tuition
Monday to Friday 9.00 am – 3.30 pm. Academic class room tuition will take place through the medium of the Irish Language.
4 weeks of work placement off campus will form an essential component of the course. On-campus accommodation is not provided during the work experience periods.
Extra Curricular Activities
For many years Gaeltacht na nDéise has been renowned for its traditional music and Sean-Nós singing. The Meánscoil ecognizes the importance of holding onto this rich ancestral tradition of Gaelic culture. We also understand the importance of well-being in the life of young people, focusing on sport to support mental health, developing a positive outlook on learning, and helping them to overcome life’s challenges.

- Excursions: Trabolgan, Nire Valley, Fota Wildlife Park, Blackrock Observatory, Castlecomer Discovery Park, Waterford Greenway.
- Workshops: Poetry, Drumming, DSPCA, Bodhrán, Podcasting with Radió na Gaeltachta, Self Defense, Sculpture, First Aid Course, Óga Yoga.
- Attendance at the Premiere of the SETU and NemetonTV Higher Diploma in Television and Media Production Course in Dungarvan cinema.

Who do we contact first in the event of a problem?
In the event of a problem, the Transition Year Coordinator is the designated first point of contact for parents and guardians. However, all staff members are happy to help if needed. The Principal and teachers are also available to support with any school-related matters, ensuring that concerns are addressed quickly and effectively.
Do the children wear uniforms?
Yes, children wear school uniforms from Monday to Friday during class time.
Who is the Transition Year suitable for?
The opportunity to spend Transition Year in the Gaeltacht is unique opportunity and is ideal for students interested in the Irish Language and Irish Culture. The course is particularly suited for students wishing to pursue a career in education and other related fields or other Irish Language related choices such as media, law and journalism.
Is weekend transport arranged for the students to return home on Friday and back to the campus on Sunday?
Transport is available every weekend to those who wish to avail of it. An optional transport fee per term will apply.
